This dataset aggregates data extracted from the CIRAD wood resistance to decay database, describing 580 botanical wood species belonging to 338 genera, in Montpellier, France.
WOOD RESISTANCE TO DECAY DATABASE
The CIRAD wood resistance to decay database is a part of the general CIRAD wood database covering a wide range of technological properties, mainly physics and mechanics, anatomy, chemical composition, wood machining, etc. 580 wood species are described with measurements of mass loss for standard wood specimens against standard fungal strains, in standard laboratory conditions. All basic information about these tests including maximum, minimum and mean mas loss values for 10 specimens of the same provenance, were include in the database. These measurements were taken between 1953 and 1989 using the same standard protocols. Wood resistance to decay characteristics were measured on specimen from 1,875 trees corresponding to 580 botanical species and 338 genera.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DATASET
It consists in the following file: Cirad wood resistance to decay database - dataset‧xlsx
General information
The file is in XLSX format.
Data sheets and data fields
The dataset is made up of seven tabs (or sheets): five data sheets and two comment sheets. All these sheets are detailed below. Decay tests This sheet gathers the results from the 9842 tests in CTFT reference numerical order (472 tests have no N° CTFT) with the 14 followings characteristics: Species, Country (provenance of the tree), N° CTFT (laboratory code), Vernacular name, Year (of the test), Spec. type* (dimension of the specimen tested, T1 to T5), Duration (duration of the test, in week)), Nb FS (number of fungal strain used), FS (fungal strain used, see Comment decay sheet), Zone (HW, for heartwood or SW, for sapwood), Nb Spec. (number of specimens tested against the fungal strain), mean ML (mean mass loss, in %), min ML (minimum mass loss, in %), max ML (maximum mass loss, in %). * : T1 (30x10x5 mm); T2 (50x14x5 mm); T3 (50x14x14 mm); T4 (50x25x15 mm) ; T5 (50x17x17 mm) Decay + Chemistry T1 HW This second sheet gathers the results for 182 species. It was built from the Decay test sheet for the mass loss, using only heartwood specimen type T1 against the four standard fungal strains (F1, F2, F4, F6) and from the chemical data sheet (Gérard et al. 2019) for the chemical composition and density of the species common to both sheets. There are 15 characteristics: Family (corresponding families in CIRAD wood collection – Dataset), Genus, Species, mean ML (Mean value of mass losses for the 4 fungal strains, in %)), D*ML (Product of the two characteristics: density, in kg/m3, and mean mass loss for the species, in %), mean Nb (mean number of trees tested against the 4 fungal strains), Nb trees (number of trees in the chemical test), D (wood density, in kg/m3), AB ext (% extractive content in alcool-benzene solution), W ext (% extractive content in hot water), Ash (% mineral content), Silica (% silica content), Tot (total result of chemical analyses in %), Lig rel (relative lignin content in %), Pento rel (relative pentosan content in %), Cell rel (relative cellulose content in %). For lignin, pentosane and cellulose content, relative means that the proportion is based on the extracted mass instead of the initial dry mass, in order to avoid low values due to very high levels of extractives, not representative of the basic ligno-cellulosic matter. Decay + Chemistry T4 HW This sheet gathers the results for 100 wood species. It was built just like the precedent sheet but using only heartwood specimen type T4. Species T1 This sheet gathers the results for 219 species. It was built from the Decay test sheet for the mass loss, using only heartwood specimen type T1 against the four standard fungal strains (F1, F2, F4, F6). There are 18 characteristics: Species T1 (all species for specimen type T1), Nb Fi (number of tests for fungal strain Fi, i=1, 2, 4, 6, see Comment decay sheet), Mean (mean mass loss value for Fi), Min (minimum mass loss value for Fi), Max (maximum mass loss value for Fi), G mean (global mean mass loss for the 4 fungal strains F1, F2, F4 and F6). Species T4 This sheet gathers the results for 151 species. It was built just like the precedent sheet but using only heartwood specimen type T4. Comment decay + chemistry Explanations on resistance to decay characteristics and Chemistry characteristics Comment decay Explanations on parameters of resistance to decay tests and list of the fungal strains used for the 9842 tests.
