Description	This data was collected during the project Odyssea - Observatory of the Dinamics of Societies and Environments in the Amazon. Through a partnership with Family Farmer Unions (STTR), community researchers realized surveys with kobotoolbox application with 544 family farmers in the Santarem Planalto, in April-June 2019. The research, built through a citizen science process, involving farmer unions and community leaders, aimed at understanding the impact on smallholders of global changes, in particular agrobusiness pressure (soy). Social Science and Humanities Metadata

Unit of Analysis	The unit of analysis are the family farmers' households.
Universe	Our study applies to the rural communities of the « Planalto Santareno region », which involves the municipalities of Mojuí dos Campos and Belterra, and part of the municipality of Santarém (see Cortes et al, 2019, for a definition of our study area). The research universe is not totally clear, due to a lack of reliable oficial statistical information. The last Agricultural Census of the Brazilian Institute of Geographical Statistics (IBGE) of 2017 counted approximatly 8,000 family farmer establishments in the three municipalities (Santarém, Mojuí dos Campos and Belterra). However, the Family farmers' and workers Unions (STTRs) have 28,900 farmers registered in these three municipalities. They estimate that the Planalto region counts approximately 10,600 farming families. See the distribution of information per municipality in the following table. Sampling Procedure	The quantitative data were captured by a non-probabilistic sampling process by quotas. Based on a participatory zoning (Cortes et al, 2019), defining the situations of family farmers regarding agrobusiness (soy), we selected 4 zones in each municipality (Santarém, Mojuí dos Campos, Belterra): dominant agrobusiness, mixed family farming and agrobusiness, dominant family farming, and agrobusiness advancing on family farming. In each municipality (Santarém, Mojuí dos Campos, Belterra), one zone of each kind was selected. We have thus composed a sub-universe of 12 zones (4 zones x 3 municipalities) In each zone, we aimed at intervieweing families in at least 5 communities, with 9 interviews per community, to achieve at least 45 families per zone. Families were chosen to represent a diversity of situations in each community.
Collection Mode	Data collection was realized by 18 communities researchers (young farmers), organized in three teams, one per municipality. Each team was coordinated by a person indicated by the Farmer Union, with a very good knowledge of field, so as to be able to mobilize the community representants and orient towards collecting a diversity of farmers. Two general coordinator from the University of Brasilia, living in Santarém, followed closely all the field work to support and orient the selection of communities and households to be interviewed.

Control Operations	Mechanisms for data consistency were applied, to check uniformity of information, without bias in the results, with the purpose of maintaining standardized information.
Cleaning Operations	During the survey application, respondents were free to use the units of area, weight and measure of their choice, so as not to bring bias through erroneous calculations. The units were then converted to the metric system. Dates and ages were also standardized. Grammar and digitation errors were corrected.
